Pretty Neat:Get Organized & Let Go of Perfection ~ Book ~ GIVEAWAY!!! ~ Ends 3/28Monday, March 14, 2011
I'm sure all of us would love to have the organizational skills of Martha Stewart. I'm also sure all of us have at one time or another set unrealistic, unattainable standards for ourselves - based on our view of perfection, the Martha Stewart's of the world.
My biggest problem in organization is having a place for everything. Actually, I think it's more about a lack of storage for all of my things. Containers make sense of chaos. I need a basket, bin, shelf , or cubby for every grouping I own.
The trouble with needing a container for everything is that these groups of things could go on forever. Each of my interests break down into many different parts. Lets take for example paper. I would need a box for paper, glues, glitters, markers, pens, stencils, embellishments, cards, stationary... the list goes on and on. Then I would need a tote or basket that could contain all of my other little boxes. An ecosystem of sorts - everything that functions together lives together.
As things are now, I have a couple of crafty lidded boxes with everything piled in. Everything living together but no functioning going on.
This goes for all of my interests & projects. Even goes for my bloggy work. This post is going out today because it is the DEADLINE. I would have gotten it done before if I were organized. I have been reading the book nightly, but without an email reminder, I would have missed the deadline on paper copy that's piled in a stack of non functioning papers.
This book has been a pretty fun and practical read. It has helped me to see my actual problem in keeping organized. I was able to put my finger on it and have discovered I need containers and that I also need to donate some things to the Goodwill!
I also learned that rather than figuring out and doing what works for us, we put someone else's expectations of perfection onto ourselves. Whether it be from our Mother or Grandmother or the friend from work with the immaculate home or Martha Stewart, it's not a system that works for us, it's what we think it should be.
This book really helped me figure out what works for me and to let go of the rest. Organization is a personal system - it doesn't need to be perfect, it just needs to work for you!
